2012 Blowfish Invitational - Top 8: Semifinals

Enrico Guarneri vs Michael Strauss:

Enrico used his First Seeded Position to start the semi-final, Enrico announced that he would keep his hand; as does Michael.

Enrico opened with a Champion of the Parish, Michael played Blood Crypt and used Pillar of Flame to exile the Champion of the Parish. A Precinct Captain was Enrico's next play, with Michael casting Farseek to fetch a Blood Crypt.

A Knight of Glory meant the Precinct Captain was swinging for 3 damage, unblocked, a 1/1 Soldier and a War Falcon joined his board. Huntmaster of the Fells netted Michael some life before he passed back to Enrico.

A Fiend Hunter before Combat allowed Enrico to swing for 7 potential damage with all his creatures, Michael's only block was his 2/2 Wolf trading with the Knight of Glory. Michael cast a Thundermaw Hellkite, but chose not to attack as he passed.

A Lyev Skyknight in Enrico's turn detained the Thundermaw Hellkite and with all his creatures swinging Michael was on 5 life, this climbed when a Dreadbore killed the Fiend Hunter, returning the Huntmaster of the Fells to the board. Michael followed up with a Vampire Nighthawk and passed.

Enrico reinforced his creatures with a Knight of Glory before passing, Michael leaned forward as he studied the cluttered board, and passed, letting the Huntmaster of the Fells transform into the Ravager of the Fells, which killed the Lyev Skyknight.

Enrico cast a Champion of the Parish, in Michael's turn the Vampire Nighthawk swung in, and Kessig Wolf Run boosted the damage to 7, Enrico drew his card, and conceded the game.

Game 2:
With side-boarding complete and both decks shuffled Michael and Enrico drew their starting hands. Enrico kept his hand, as did Michael.

A War Falcon was Enrico's first play, with Michael using Blood Crypt to cast Pillar of Flame on the War Falcon.

Enrico cast a Knight of Glory, and Michael played Farseek in his turn to fetch another Blood Crypt. Enrico sent in the Knight of Glory for 3 damage, dropping Michael to 15 life, a Geist of Saint Traft appeared on Enrico's board. A Pillar of Flame exiled the Knight of Glory, but Enrico still dealt 6 damage in his turn thanks to Geist of Saint Traft and it's attendant angel.

Michael played his first creature of the game, when he cast a Thundermaw Hellkite, a Fiend Hunter however, ensured Enrico had a clear board as the Geist of Saint Traft swung in again leaving Michael on 3 life points.

A Dreadbore freed the Thundermaw Hellkite, which was joined by a Vampire Nighthawk. Enrico cast another Fiend Hunter to lock-down the Vampire Nighthawk, Enrico swung in with the Geist of Saint Traft, Michael blocked the Angel with his Dragon, leaving him on 1 life point.

A Bonfire of the Damned for 2 damage sent the Geist of Saint Traft to the Graveyard. A Sublime Archangel joined Enrico's side and the turn was passed back to Michael. A Rakdos Keyrune cast by Michael would have allowed him to block all the creatures, but a second Sublime Archangel meant that when the first Angel swung in it was a 10/10 Angel.

Michael drew his card and conceded the game.

Game 3:
Michael was on the play in the deciding game, Enrico shuffled his hand back, and kept his six cards.

A Mountain was Michael's opening card, with Enrico playing a Plains used to cast a Champion of the Parish. Michael used his second turn to Farseek for a Blood Crypt, Enrico cast a second Champion, and then a third, and sent in the first Champion to deal 3 damage.

Michael cast a Huntmaster of the Fells and returned his life to 19.

A Knight of Glory boosted all three Champion of the Parish, Enrico contemplated the board for long before sending his two biggest Champions who are at 4/4 and 3/3, Michael used his 2/2 Wolf to block the biggest Human, and took 3 damage from the other.

Michael Miracles a Bonfire of the Damned for 3 damage, Enrico responded by using a Faith's Shield to protect the 3/3 Champion of the Parish, but lost the rest of his creatures.A Fiend Hunter exiled the Huntmaster of the Fells; Enrico followed up with 9 damage from his two Humans.

Michael gained 5 life when a Thragtusk entered the Battlefield.

In his turn Enrico cast a fourth Champion of the Parish and turned the now 6/6 Champion of the Parish on its side, Michael eventually blocked with his Thragtusk.

Michael dispatched the 1/1 Champion with a Pillar of Flame and cast Farseek to fetch an Overgrown Tomb.

Enrico sent in both his remaining Champions, a potential 11 damage was possible, Michael threw his 3/3 Beast in front of the 6/6 Champion and dropped to 7 life.

Michael cast Olivia Voldaren and passed the turn after pausing for a few moments.

Enrico attacked with both Champions again, Michael turns the biggest Champion into a Vampire, but still lost his lone creature to the combat damage when he blocked the larger Champion with Olivia Voldaren.

Michael cast Huntmaster of the Fells which gave him some relief, but that was only momentary as Enrico cast a Silverblade Paladin, and Soul Bonded with the 6/6 Champion. Michael used his Huntmaster and Wolf Token to block both Attackers.

Michael drew his card, stared at the board, finally throwing in the towel. Enrico was through to the finals.
